Solar Heat Europe together with the European Geothermal Energy Council and Bioenergy Europe addressed today a letter to European policymakers in regard to the urgent need to focus on renewable heating technologies in order to deliver the Renewable Energy Directive and a successful Renovation Wave.

While welcoming the recently announced commitment of the European Commission to set up the EU’s 2030 climate and energy targets to accelerate investment in a climate-neutral future, the representatives of the trade associations are urging policymakers to take stronger actions for the decarbonisation of heating.

In particular, we call for a mandatory national target for renewable heat sources and the immediate ban on fossil fuel subsidies.

Heating accounts for almost half of the energy consumed in the EU and around 80% of it comes from fossil fuel sources. Therefore, it is critical to increasing our ambitions for this sector.
