The Affordable Housing Initiative European Partnership continues its webinar series aimed at bridging EU policy and practical implementation in the field of affordable housing renovation.

The second webinar, titled “Implementing the RED and EED in Practice – Renewable solutions for renovation,” will take place online on 7 July, from 09:30 to 11:00 CET. The objective is again to bring together policymakers, industry experts, civil society representatives and practitioners to explore how major EU legislative initiatives can be translated into practical action on the ground.

This session will focus on the growing role of renewable energy in building renovation and how the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) are shaping renovation strategies across Europe. As the EU accelerates efforts to decarbonise the building stock, integrating renewable technologies into renovation projects supports the sector to meet climate objectives while aiming at affordability.

Connecting policy, construction, and technology stakeholders with civil society

The session will begin with an overview of the legislative framework, examining the building-related provisions under the RED, the efficiency-first principle under the EED, public sector obligations and the interaction between these directives and the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).

The speakers then will provide practical insights into renewable solutions that can be deployed in renovation projects, with a particular focus on their feasibility, cost implications and implementation in affordable housing. Parting from practical applications, several sources of energy that can support affordable renovation will be explored, including geothermal systems, solar thermal technologies and bioenergy applications.

A societal perspective on affordability will complement the technical discussions, highlighting experiences from the social housing sector and examining how renewable energy solutions can contribute to more affordable and resilient housing.

An interactive Q&A session will allow participants to exchange directly with experts on how to combine energy efficiency measures and renewable technologies in a cost-effective manner.
