IKEA Singapore: Cool furniture – Cool environment

IKEA is an innovative company in many respects. In addition to its innovative products and solutions, IKEA is also very innovative in terms of covering as much of its energy requirements as possible with renewable energy sources.

In Singapore in particular, the space available for the installation of renewable energy solutions is very limited. The only available space in most of the multi-storey buildings is the roof area. IKEA’s main objective was to achieve maximum coverage of its energy requirements using renewable energy sources.

Technology

IKEA decided to install a solar thermal air conditioning system, which has the following advantages:

  • High specific solar yield per m² solar system
  • Shifting solar yields to night-time operating hours thanks to hot water storage tank
  • Proven technology with performance guarantee
  • Low maintenance requirements for the system
  • Possible multiplication factor for other IKEA buildings worldwide

SOLID worked closely with IKEA on the installation of the solar thermal air conditioning system.

SOLID assessed the existing cooling requirements and the available roof area and designed an individually optimized system for IKEA Singapore. The solar system can cover part of the existing cooling demand of the multi-storey building.

Impact:

  • saves the equivalent of 200 jetliner flights from Singapore to Sydney
  • saves 3 million kWh of energy through locally harnessed solar energy
  • the equivalent of the demand of 283 four-bedroom apartments in Singapore
  • saves 2.4 million dollars in electricity costs over the next ten years
  • solar helps keep operating costs low
