Solar Heat Europe is actively engaged in the revision currently under way for the Energy Labelling requirements for space and combination heaters. We support the Commissions objective to improve clarity, comparability and consumer understanding. However, the current draft unintentionally removes the main mechanism through which solar thermal technologies have been visible in the space heating framework: the installer made package label. Without corrective measures, solar thermal would lose visibility in the revised label, despite being a mature, EU manufactured renewable technology that delivers high efficiency, predictable energy savings and significant decarbonisation potential. To avoid this unintended outcome, we propose a set of targeted, fully compatible adjustments.
1. Introduce a dedicated Solar Thermal Collector Label for space heating.
2. Ensure consistency between Energy Labelling and Ecodesign.
3. Ensure that requirements remain proportionate and compatible with an SME based, EU manufactured sector.
Further technical details and rationale were provided in the open consultation in Jan. 2026, and active engagement with Member States and the Commission on this critical matter is under way.
