Solar Heat Europe calls on industry to engage in EU’s Industrial Decarbonisation Bank pilot auction

As announced in the Clean Industrial Deal, the European Commission will launch its €100 billion Industrial Decarbonisation Bank in 2026. Its aim will be to support the decarbonisation of production processes in Europe. Ahead of this launch, a pilot auction will be offered to industrial players, by the end of 2025. The European Commission recently published the draft Terms and Conditions (T&Cs) for this first auction, and is awaiting feedback on the draft by 15th August 2025 through this email address (clima-auctions@ec.europa.eu).

Solar Heat Europe is committed to making this pilot auction, and ultimately the Industrial Decarbonisation Bank, a success. Solar thermal energy makes an important contribution in the decarbonisation of many industrial processes (see link). Many sectors, including food and beverage, agri-food, textiles and pulp and paper, have chosen solar thermal energy to decarbonise their production in Europe. Supporting their transition means supporting Europe’s manufacturing base.

Solar thermal energy is a renewable energy, manufactured in Europe, which provides heat at temperatures of up to 400 degrees, covering half of the heating needs of the industry. Thanks to the right legal framework and adequate financial support, solar heat will play a key role in decarbonizing European industrial processes without overloading electricity grids.

Solar Heat Europe is currently finalising its input to this consultation and invites all its members involved in the large scale industry decarbonisation projects to actively contribute to this consultation by the given deadline.
