Yes to 45% RES! Scientists, cities, and renewable energy unite behind higher EU renewables target

Solar Heat Europe in partnership with other renewable energy and city associations, and with the endorsement of scientists from the IPCC and leading universities, is calling members of the European Parliament and EU Member States representatives to endorse a minimum 45% renewable target by 2030.

The joint letter was published on December 8th, and it underlines the critical importance of accelerating the clean energy transition to avoid climate catastrophe.

A 45% renewable energy target, up from the current 40% proposed by the European Commission, is the most cost-efficient way to reach the EU’s 2030 55% greenhouse gas emissions reduction target and would put the continent on track to deliver on the 1.5° Paris Agreement scenario.

The #YesTo45RES campaign led by Solar Power Europe is currently running on different digital communication channels, highlighting the reasons behind the increased renewables target ask and inviting other entities to join the movement.

Solar Heat Europe is actively supporting the campaign, stressing the importance of taking ambitious actions this decade to transition fully to renewable solutions, especially in the heating and cooling sector, as it accounts for half of the energy consumed in Europe. All heating systems that will be installed after this decade, will still be there in 2050, so they must be based on renewable heat technologies such as solar heat.
