News from Members: Record increase, uncertainty and professionalization in the Swiss solar industry

On the occasion of the general meeting of the Swiss Association for Solar Energy, Swissolar, which was held online in October, the industry discussed the currently positive but, given to the global pandemic, uncertain prospects for the solar energy market in the medium term.

Swissolar managing director David Stickelberger pointed out that since the beginning of the year the number of registrations for the one-off remuneration has almost doubled compared to the same period in the previous year, with the increase in both large and small systems. He predicted a new record of over 400 megawatts, which, however, is still well below the required annual increase of over 1000 MW.

Whether this positive trend will continue next year, however, depends largely on the overall economic development. There are currently many vacancies in the solar sector – cooperation with industries that have been severely affected by the pandemic, such as those from the event and event sector, is currently already taking place. In the best-case scenario, growth in the solar industry could also help cushion the economic effects of the pandemic.
