The new Small is Beautiful identity will include both a renewable electricity and renewable heating & cooling solutions.
On March 19th, members of the Small is Beautiful (SiB) coalition met in Brussels to discuss a revision of the scope of the initiative and new policy joint actions.
Small is Beautiful is a communications campaign that was created following the preliminary announcement of the EU’s Clean Energy Package (CEP) to focus the attention of policy makers on small-scale renewables. It gathered together stakeholders in the energy community, including SMEs and consumer-rights organisations.
The adoption of the CEP in December 2019 made the main objective of the coalition obsolete, and consequently participants have now decided to review SiB’s identity. After an intense debate with different interests at stake, participants agreed on a broader scope for the coalition, clearly mentioning that renewable small-scale solutions include both electricity and heating & cooling, instead of only focusing on the electricity sector.
The coalition will now work on the European Commission’s long term 2050 strategy and on EU state aid. Other files relevant for the solar thermal sector, such as Annex VIII of the Energy Efficiency Directive and the European Investment Bank’s (EIB) Energy Lending policy will be discussed at future meetings.
